The Navigator

The Navigator (2000)

Oil on canvas, 72x132cm

The detail in top left comes from Holbien's painting of Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve, commonly known as The Ambassadors. The ship is supposedly Magellan's Victoria passing Tierre Del Fuego, but if you compare it with that in The World Encompassed, it's actually the Golden Hind again. Magellan is of course credited with being the first person to circumnavigate the globe, though having died en route the honour really should go to the eighteen men who actually survived the journey
