The Five Senses: Hearing (2003) Acrylic on canvas, 30.5x30.5cm Private collection The image for Hearing came from a performance called Punta1, by Rotozaza, which was performed at the Stoke Newington Festival 2003 in Clissold Park. Two performers were both wearing headphones, listening to synchronised instructions. The foreground figure in this painting, seated amongst the audience, is speaking the instructions through a megaphone to the other performer, somewhere in the crowded park, following the instructions. When the piece began, the audience did not know who the other performer was, and this only became clear as the instructions became more specific. The image seemed quite appropriate for the sense of hearing: the headphones signify that the protagonist can hear something that is necessarily internalised, yet through the action of speaking, produces something heard by all. ©copyright 2005 Nicholas Middleton |
